Before asking about the benefits that you could expect when studying Informatics and Computer Engineering, let’s figure out some basic knowledge about this major.
-
What is Information? According to Wikipedia, Information is something that has a specific content or meaning so that people can have a clear idea about it, learn from it or understand it. Information is in everything we see everyday, from the road sign we see on the way to school, the history book we read during lecture, a status on facebook from your friends about the graduation ceremony and so on. To come to the field of Computer Science, Information is considered as categorized and examined data. As being raw data, they don’t have clear meaning and can not be used. With the help of computers, data will be transformed into informative ones that we can really learn or take advantage from them. For example, a list of students with their grades on the mid-term exam is considered as raw data. By categorizing them, the teacher will be able to see who got the highest grade.

What is Computer? Computer is a machine which is used for information processing, making data become useful for human activities. Besides, a computer is a perfect alternative for the human memory that we can store any information we want and easily look for it when necessary. Nowadays, with the fast-growing of Internet, computers become a helpful assistance for us to share information, connect with others and approach the largest data source online.

What is Engineering? According to the definition of Wikipedia, Engineering is “the use of science and math to design or make things”. Therefore, Computer Engineering refers to the work related with parts of the computer, mainly software and hardware of it, in order to improve the operation and make it smaller, lighter than before.
When studying in the field of Computer Engineering, students will not only focus on the hardware of the computer but also obtain theoretical knowledge of computers; learn to control the software components of a computer; furthermore, they will always have to update about the latest Information Technology trends to apply totheir skills and practices. Meeting all of these requirements, Informatics & Computer Engineering graduates can seek chances in the most trendingpaths of the present, including Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering and of course Computer Engineering.
Nowadays, it is undeniable that Computer Science and Information Technology have a crucial impact on every industry in both positive and negative ways. On one hand, there are numerous achievements in technology that we are reaping the benefits from them without concerning how they are changing our lives. The birth of Artificial Intelligence (AI), autonomous vehicles, 3D printing, the growth of MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses), etc. or the advancement in technology, help us work more effectively, live better off and broaden our chances to exceed our dreams. On the other hand, many tasks and job titles today will be disappearing at an unprecedented pace when they can easily be done by machines and robots. According to the World Economic Forum, up to 2022, half of the work will be shared with the support of machines, therefore, about 75 million jobs will be displaced by the technology innovation.
However, looking at the bright side, we can see that there will be a number of 133 millions of available emerging positions along with plenty of rising demand for well-qualified skills and knowledge. Along with that, the high demand for well-qualified Computer Engineer or Computer Scientist makes the related programs become captivating and valuable for any students who are seeking chances to pursue a potential job in their favorable field – as Information Technology has been seeping into almost every domain in our lives.

During and after studying Informatics & Computer Engineering, students will be able to:
-
obtain the core knowledge and skills in the field of Computer Science and Computer Technology, get the answer for very basic-but-difficult questions such as:
-
How do algorithms work?
-
What role does the software system play in the functioning of the computer?
-
What are the differences between information and data?
-
-
demonstrate important skills for project management such as time management skill, critical thinking, organization skill, and communication skills
-
possess industry-specific technical skills for the area of practice, such as networking, computer programming, engineering technologies or product development. Each field will require detailed skills, for example, computer programmers will have to acquire in-depth understanding of popular programming languages and frameworks like Python, JavaScript, Linux, C++, etc.
Unlike other programs provided by Vietnam National University, Hanoi – International School, seniors in ICE program don’t have elective modules. They will focus on exploring the vast range of career opportunities in this field with some concentrated courses such as Embedded Systems and Microcontrollers; Local Area Networks; Digital Signal Processing; etc.
For quick reference, you can glance at some job titles listed below that are categorized into four main career paths of ICE graduates:
4.1. Computer Science
In general, a computer scientist often studies and researches about the way we can collect, store, analyze and utilize data or information by the computer. They can deal with abstract problems such as mathematical theories of Machine Learning; find ideal solutions to make computers run faster or avoid computer errors. They approach the problems in a theoretical way.
However, Computer Science is a very broad field that professionals have to be specialized in a particular sub-area in order to work. Therefore, they can be considered as a computer engineer or any related titles.
-
Research Computer Scientist
-
Software Developer
-
Desktop Support Technicians
-
System and Network Administrator
4.2. Computer Engineering
In this post, we will agree that the term “Computer Engineering” refers to the jobs dealing with hardware systems or all the parts of the computer.
There are two main parts of the computer, namely hardware and software components. Computer hardware is all about the physical parts of a computer that we can see, hold or touch it. For instance, there is a central processing unit (CPU), network card, random-access memory (RAM) and some peripherals equipments (keyboard, USB, etc.) Computer software is a set of instructions that makes the hardware system work. Each software program is made to do a specific task, such as game, calculating; or manage the operation of all the applications – this is called an operation system. Without the software component, computers cannot run properly.

Some Emerging Career Paths
As we have said before, about 133 million emerging jobs will be available mostly in the field of Data Science and Computer Engineering. Some careers of the future will be listed below. Many of these terms are becoming hot topics nowadays, such as the Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and so forth.
Big Data: At the beginning of 2020, the number of bytes in the digital universe was 40 times more than the number of stars in the observable universe, claimed by the World Economic Forum.
Cybersecurity: the high demand for professionals is always along with the accelerated growth of Computer Science. However, the dire need of workers in this field is partly due to the lack of cybersecurity courses during college and university. At VNU-IS, seniors will have the optional courses in Information Security in the fourth academic year.
Internet of Things (IoT): when every device becomes “smart” nowadays is mostly because of the growth of Internet of Things (IoT) – the connective among devices to exchange and collect data in order to give better solutions, assist people with informed recommendations and directly enhance our living conditions.
Robotics: Computer Engineers can improve better manufacture chain management by designing effective robotic systems
Artificial Intelligence (AI): one of the most remarkable breakthroughs of the Industry 4.0, AI is a promising technology to enhance computer systems for better problem-solving, decision making and support many human activities from large-scale industries to our everyday lives.
Sophia, a social humanoid robot, created by Hanson Robotics, is a telling example of technology breakthrough in this century. Sophia is a unique combination of artificial intelligence, visual data processing and facial recognition, representing the advancement in robotics and AI research. (Sc: hansonrobotics.com,Twitter)
